The "energy emergency" declaration is such farce. We are an energy independent nation. We produce more oil and natural gas than any country in the world ever has and the petroleum we do import comes from our closest allies. There is no emergency!
Thank you for sharing this! I want to add that NOAA’s NMFS faces these deadlines while also having to get public opinion and scientific opinion. All the while, Trump is trying to dismantle NOAA. My contacts there have been alluding to it being a madhouse. I was able to intern at headquarters in the summer of 2023 and these people are amazing at what they do. Each plays an important role.
At the hearing in 2023 for the ESA, Republicans spouted blatant lies about Democrats (including the head of DNR who was present), going and physically relocating animals who are endangered to areas of the country where the goal is to drill for oils or fossil fuels so that this isn’t possible. 🤦🏻♀️ They also kept stating that all endangered species should be put in zoos. Every single organism. How would that even begin to work? The goal is rehabilitation for release with the recovery of habitats.
I can’t wait to go back and watch today’s discussion, but I have to find my popcorn first.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! Yes, exactly- these processes take time, and there's now way less experienced, expert staff to do it. And that is WILD what you're sharing about the hearings in 2023. Now go get your popcorn!
Of course!! I interned at headquarters for 8 weeks but even then I’m no pro! There was SO much going on and a lot is nuanced learning as you go. There are deals and conversations happening with foreign countries and there’s an art to that. Replacing people who don’t suit the president’s needs is detrimental to the well-being of everything NOAA stands for.
And will do! I’ll honestly have to do a write up because I have such weird experience with my background.

It's fantastic to watch your work (literally) demonstrating how much #artmatters in confronting big environmental and societal challenges. Let's finally get you on #sustainwhat to build on this earlier show on cartooning around science and policy: https://revkin.substack.com/p/when-it-comes-to-climate-and-sustainable?utm_source=publication-search

A lucid and compelling call to action. Thanks, Perrin!
