Thirsty Science at Format Festival, and Open Studios next weekend.
Faunal fornication at Format, etc.
Thirsty Science went to a music festival! Bizarre Bazaar curator Alice Russotti invited me to take the animal lust live at a new festival in Bentonville, Arkansas. Beloved friend and hero Vanessa Rathbone helped me set up an animal menu in front of our experience booth, and people moving through the Bizarre Bazaar could pick their animal of choice to learn from me about its thirsty lifestyle.
We are working on a reel of just viewer reactions because, per usual, the animal queendom really knocked some festival-goer socks off. I think many attendees being on acid really helped my cause. Visitors then came into the booth and, if they wanted a sexy little Thirsty Science temporary tattoo of animals in compromised positions, which apparently a lot of them did, they helped me with some visual research by completing a drawing exercise. I now have hundreds of these stunning viewer illustrations.
Some people were handed their drawing sheet and knew they were born for the role and set to work. Many of the people who participated in the comic-making disclaimed that they could not draw before they began, and many of those same people then spent 20 minutes working on one-of-a-kind never before seen out of this world drawings. I am in love with the drawings people made, and I’m fascinated by the patterns across them. (These exercises are inspired by Lynda Barry’s Making Comics and Syllabus drawing prompt work.)
It was such a joy to try Thirsty Science live. What I loved most was learning just how many people love the animals that I do, who also care a great deal about our multi-species fellowship in the sixth mass extinction. Thanks again to Alice and Vanessa for so much support and making it possible for me to be there!
NEXT WEEKEND: Come see me at my studio! Where the weirdness unfolds as the animals tell it to me! Buy prints or original art, see works in progress, and pop by 300 other artist’s studios. 56 2nd Ave at 9th St in Gowanus, Studio 8. I’ll be there 12-6 both days, don’t be a square, come through.
Hope to see you there!
Yours ever carnally,
Perrin
