Friends, fam, supporters: two weeks ago today, just two days after my feline son fractured BOTH hips, I delivered my book, Poking the Squid: What we can learn from Animal Sex to my editor Amy Cherry at W.W. Norton and Company.
I am so grateful to the 50+ scientists that spent time with me reviewing their research for the book, who read drafts and gave feedback, who shared behind the scenes photos. I see the book as a collaboration with my favorite thinkers about how we grapple with non-human animal life on this planet. What we talk about when we talk about animal sex (TLDR: ourselves.) The book is meant to be a visual synthesis of excellent ideas and experiments and theory generated by a diverse group of incredible people.
I’m so excited to share more when I can, but for now some videos of illustration-making.
First, Timelapse video of me painting a green frog flanked by scientists Max Lambert and Melina Packer, who’ve done incredible work interrogating how environmental toxicology grapples with the impact of chemicals on frog bodies.
Second, Timelapse of me painting a diagram of duck sex. You’ll have to wait and find out just what everyone involved is getting up to! Based on research by Patty Brennan, friend of the book!
I’m back in a big way to this email newsletter this summer. Thank you for your patience while I was on book deadline.
I want to share more daily comics, and comics I make while exploring some questions I’m interested in about insect intimacy, and updates from residencies. In August I’m traveling to the Galápagos Islands with my favorite science writer, Lucy Cooke. I’ll have tons of sketchbook drawings and diary comics from that trip to share. Sept 1-30 I’ll be artist in residence with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Works on Water at the NY Aquarium- if you’re local, please come visit! I’ll be making wall-size comics of the livestream of the NOAA dive into the Hudson Canyon, which WCS and NOAA are working to get designated as a marine monument. I might get to go out to the where the dive is happening during my residency! I’ll have lots of art to share here from that. And Oct 6-18 I’ll be at the graphic novel artist residency at BANFF Centre.
What do you want to learn about this summer?
Love you and thank you for your support!

When can we pre-order??
Maybe a little basic but we are seeing so many dolphins and whales outside of our house in montauk and it would be fun to know more about what their up to and have some fun facts to share with guests that are visiting. Just an idea! Another one is the sand crabs, they always cause a ruckus when were digging our holes.
