As we close out August, I’m in midcoast Maine thinking of one of my favorite tide poolers, Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us, and The Edge of the Sea. She resided on Southport Island, Maine in the summers, and they say she used to go down to the water’s edge after dinner and collect a jar of seawater, and spend her Maine evenings studying what appeared in her microscope lens back in her cabin. I’m sharing the July 2022 PRI Update here in honor of her work, and to invite you to come draw with me in Maine, or get out in your local tide pools, marshes, wetlands, streams and poke around while the August sun shines bright. If you get to doodling any of the life encounters you have there- shoot me a note.
I’m leading a drawing jam this week at The Carpenter’s Boatshop in Pemaquid because I’ve decided to take on the challenge of drawing all 118 (by my count) living beings in her first book, Under the Sea Wind, and I want some reader contributions. So I’ve asked Pemaquid residents to come help me this Thursday evening at the boatshop- any doodling experience welcome!
Drawing Jam!
Help Perrin Ireland Draw Every Life Form in Under the Sea Wind!
Thursday, August 24th, 5-7pm
ALL AGES WELCOME
Pemaquid summer resident and 2022 Carpenter's Boat Shop Artist-in-Residence Perrin Ireland has an ocean animal drawing mission, and she needs your help! She wants to draw every creature in Southport summer resident Rachel Carson's Under the Sea Wind (1941), and there are 118 of them and she can't do it alone! Bust out your pens and pencils and come to the Boat Shop for an informal drawing jam. Bring some picnic fare, and let's draw some Northern Atlantic ocean animals together.
