A quick action to take on behalf of forests
Register your opposition to rescinding the Roadless Rule
The Roadless Rule is a Clinton-era ruling that prevents developing…yes, roads in public land managed by the forest service. 58.5 million acres of the last intact habitats for many wide-ranging critters I hold dear. It is not popular to do this, which is why they’ve given three weeks for public comment (the standard is 60 days.) You can voice your opposition.
Where roads are built, commercial logging and increased human presence follows. And this is not ideal for the animals that need to traverse vast territories not degraded by human presence for their lifestyles. Nor is it good for preserving the last remaining intact forests, and carbon sinks, in our country. NOR is it good for river water quality and fish stocks. I COULD GO ON.
Here’s more info from EarthJustice. And NRDC. And more background on the roadless rule. An excellent primer here by Wes Siler on the political machinations behind all of this. (Hint: Murkowski, the much-beleaguered Tongass, and the Big Beautiful Bill.)
